Regulator to focus on safety compliance at Sydney Easter Show

Amusement rides, safe forklift operation, traffic management, working at heights and electrical safety as well as gas storage at food stalls have been subject to increased scrutiny by SafeWork NSW inspectors and engineers ahead of the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

The regulator said that ‘reasonably practicable’ control measures must be implemented for carnival rides to manage the risks associated with operating amusement devices. Current registration, maintenance, and training records must also be readily available.

SafeWork NSW inspectors and engineers have been onsite since 4 March, providing advice and undertaking compliance activities ahead of the show, which is expected to attract almost 900,000 people in the coming weeks.

The regulator said inspectors will continue onsite inspections throughout the entirety of the 2024 Sydney Royal Easter Show and will also be involved in the show’s shut down, ensuring safe work methods are always being used.

“Our inspectors will have a constant presence at the Show and will be providing advice and assistance where it is needed,” said head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin.

The regulator drew attention to its amusement ride regulations and a national audit tool to help amusement device owners prepare for an audit as well as Safe Work Australia’s guide for amusement rides.
